And, here we go! Tittle and synopsis are probably the first ones that we notice when we are trying to find a good book, watch a good movie or seeking a hella great anime. The names can go as bland as One Punch Man or comes with a certain hidden message to be expected such as The Promised Neverland and 5 Centimeter Per Seconds. The common thing is that, all of them can portray what the story is going to be about, and what to be expected of it.

HOWEVER, there are always some exceptions that is just weird enough to leave you ‘bamboozled’ because it’s not possible to derive what the plot will be based on the name itself, which is intriguing enough to watch it or at least, to go with ‘NANI?’ expression for that instant. Without further delay, here are the top 5 anime with names that makes no sense …. until it is revealed. Worry not, there are no spoilers ahead!

#1 Your Name

2016 Movie || Kimi No Na Wa || 1 hour 46 minutes

A few words that contain so much emotions.

Kimi No Na Wa is about a high school girl in countryside, Mitsuha that yearns to live as a boy in a city and a high school boy, Taki that lives in the city pursuing his dream as an architect. Through an unusual phenomenon, they find themselves swapping bodies and living each others’ lives as they learn the impact they have on each other, but just how powerful this fate is?

A great work by Makoto Shinkai, this is probably the one common ticket that everyone has in this anime community, the feelings that it left is so strong that anyone that is not interested in anime at all, will be touched by it. It ties up everything that you see and present the ending beyond it. Adding the songs by RADWIMPS with the lyrics, the tittle can be much more impactful than it seems.

( Can’t wait for his newest work – Weathering With You )

#2 Your Lie In April

Fall 2014 || Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso || 22 episodes

A story of a pianist and violinist.

Your Lie in April starts off with the prodigy pianist, Kousei Arima that went depressed after his mother’s death, unable to hear the melody of his own piano anymore. But, his life is colored again when he meets the energetic and beautiful violinist, Kaori Miyazono that rekindles his passion in the music journey, and perhaps, changing his life forever.

This anime will give you an uncomfortable vibe because the tittle is almost nonsense and won’t have anything to do with the story at all, as it goes. The more you want to know the meaning, the hazy your view will be and you might not come to enjoy this than you could. So, just leave it at that, and watch till the end.

#3 Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Spring 2011 || Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai || 11 episodes

Again, something vague.

Anohana tells the story of Jinta Yadomi, a NEET of sort that play video games everyday instead of going to school. But, no one knows that he’s bothered by a ghost – Menma, his childhood friend that died long ago which wants him to grant her wish so that she could reincarnate. He was reluctant at first, thinking that it was only his imagination but soon come to realize that she’s real. Gathering his other childhood friends that grew apart after Menma’s death, the 5 of them unite one more time to face their past and to help Menma move on and perhaps, even themselves …

Anohana is a fine thread connecting drama, self-discovery and to learn to deal with pain and guilt – along with some drama. There is no explanation of the flower that they saw that day so, you’ll be the one to decipher it.

#4 I Want To Eat Your Pancreas

2018 Movie || Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai || 1 hour 48 minutes

This is actually a nice movie.

The male protagonist is a bookworm and introvert that has convinced himself to show no interest to others as they are to him. On one coincidence, he stumbles upon a secret diary of one of his classmates – Sakura Yamauchi, the energetic and optimistic girl. She then confides him on a terminal disease that she has, yes, a pancreatic disease, a secret that her best friends are not even aware of. Being uninterested as he is to others, she still persistently convince him to accompany her for the remaining days that she has.

He was chosen by her, and he chose her back. A story that begins in spring, where the sakura blossoms and the embrace of the true meaning of life begins. So, there you have it. A cannibal-like tittle that has a story you wouldn’t expect.

( This has quite similar vibe to Your Lie in April )

#5 Into the Forest of Fireflies’ Light

2011 Movie || Hotarubi no Mori e || 45 minutes

So, a story set in forest with fireflies?

Hotarubi no Mori e begins with six-years-old Hotaru Takegawa that is lost in the forest, only to meet a masked forest spirit named Gin. Gin eventually helped her out of the forest and warned her to not come in again. However, she pays no attention to it and keep visiting him every summer to share her stories as she grows up. A sweet short anime movie on their relationship that has only one rule – if she touches him, he will disappear.

Like the rest, it’s only when you find out about the true meaning of the tittle then you will be shocked and have those chills because of how good it is.

I’ve realized that almost all of these anime might have you shedding some tears in the end because rather than sad, they are beautiful and could reach you in ways you wouldn’t expect. Besides, their tittles are amazing and how they managed to relate back to it is just astonishing.

Spare some time to enjoy them, it would be an experience that you won’t forget! Thanks for reading, leave any other suggestions below if you have similar ones, I’d love to know more as well!
