So, let’s jump straight into it!

Whisper of the Heart

1995 || If You Listen Carefully / Mimi wo Sumaseba || Movie

The story is of Shizuku Tsukishima who is enjoying her summer vacation in a local library, where she notices odd appearance of a name – Seiji Amasawa that often pop up in her books’ check-out list. As the story goes on, she followed a cat that was riding the train to a mystery antique shop where she met Seiji’s grandfather, a violin maker and a strange cat statuette, “The Baron”. As she leans closer to it, she seems to hear it whispering something, something that motivated her, gives her the strength she needs and takes her to a future she’s never imagined.

Remarks: A generic and simple story, with a refreshing outlook on dreams and the pursuit of it.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo

Fall 2012 || The Pet Girl of Sakurasou || 24 episodes

Sorata is a cat-lover and a second year students that is forced to transfer into Sakurasou, an eccentric student dorm consists of a band of misfits – an energetic and loud animator, a level-headed playboy, a genius but reclusive programmer and the alcoholic female dorm manager. His desire to escape changed when he met Mashiro, a new talented-in-art student that is oblivious to her lifestyle as he was entrusted to the duty of taking care of her daily lives routines.

With the chaos situation in Sakurasou everyday, is it a bless in disguise or just pure misery for Sorata?

Remarks: The first impression that Sakurasou gave me was, it was purely the fanservice that drives the story. However, I was horribly mistaken. Sakurasou, as it goes on, present a fine story of rom-com, talent and friendship with its ensemble character. If you think that a show with fanservice can’t make you cry, watch this.

Summer 2016 || ReLIFE || 13 episodes (+4)

Kaizaki is a 27 years-old NEET that switched between jobs until he met Ryou, a member of LIFE research institute that offers him chance to live high-school life again as a 17 years-old with a mysterious pill. He accepted the offer, only to find out that he couldn’t keep up with all the tests, physical fitness the first day in his school. As he struggles with his new lifestyle, he slowly learns more about his classmates and in the process, how precious memories could be.

Remarks: I could not stress how much I enjoyed ReLIFE, to the bittersweetness that it gave as Angel Beats! did, a beautiful portrayal of memory like Kimi No Na Wa and blend of comedy, romance with friendship. This is simply a near-masterpiece that deserve more love than it already has.

Heaven’s Memo Pad

Summer 2011 || Kamisama no Memochou/It’s the Only NEET Thing to Do || 12 episodes

Narumi Fujishima is an introvert that’s really never fit in anywhere. Ayaka, the only member of Gardening Club tries to recruit him into the club, and knowing that he’s a loner, he was introduced to a reclusive girl living above a ramen shop, Alice. By twist of certain events, he enters a whole new secret world with an elite team of NEETs ( Not Employed, being Educated or in Training ) led by Alice, the expert hacker and private detective. With all the chaos and events unfolding everyday around him, his life might have just changed forever.

Remarks: Heaven’s Memo Pad is one of the anime where the side characters outshine the main character but still left one great impression. It focuses on complexity of emotions, rather than just the cases and it brings you close to them with a bit of drama and mystery.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

Fall 2012 || Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! || 12 episodes

The story starts off with the male protagonist Dark Flame Master, Yutaa that is attempting to ditch his childish and embarrassing past behind by moving into a high school that is further away. What he didn’t expect was to meet a girl named herself Wicked Eye, Rikka which apparently has this embarrassing syndrome known as ‘chuunibyou’ that he once had. Moreover, Rikka targeted him as her comrade to seek her ultimate goal – Ethereal Horizon.

What goes along is his attempt to avoid her as much as possible to live a normal high school life.

Remarks: One of the finest work by Kyoto Animation and one of my all-time favorites. It delivers what you expect – romance, comedy, cuteness and imaginary action. But, it offers much more than that. It can warm your feeling and drop a bit of emptiness inside the heart. It is truly one of the most beautiful story I’ve ever seen and I’d recommend it to anyone who want to enjoy something different.

End notes:

That’s all for this month! I hope that some of these anime can give you the enjoyment you’ve been craving for. As always, thanks for reading!
